SURPRISE VISIT TO AUDIT YOUR ENVIRONMENTAL RECORDS

Often, you will get a “heads-up” phone call late afternoon the day before an agency shows up to “visit” and audit your records.

Ideally, you will be able to pull together three years worth of all required records* for each waste you generate prior to the meeting. When the official shows up, you or one of your employees should be sitting there with all of these records in front of you. It’s helpful to have waste profiles, hazardous manifests and non-hazardous / universal waste manifests segregated.

Based on experience, if you are able to quickly gather three years worth of records to demonstrate proof of compliance, often, the “talking” part of meeting with the oficial is a short one.

* Hazardous waste manifests with/without Land Ban forms attached; bill of ladings, non-hazardous waste manifests; universal waste documentation; waste profiles including certificates of characteristics analysis, MSDS, generator knowledge documents, stand alone analysis; certificates of recycling, etc.
